This house on the beach at the foot of La Jolla Shores Lane is unique. The cliff-house is new, but the beach house was built in the 1960's and is a jewel, even in La Jolla, the Jewel of the Sea.
Image Copyright California Coastal records Project.
When new, there was basically just a garage at the top where the inclinator reaches the cliff's edge. The large house on the cliff replaced the garage and I believe was built by a new owner within the last few years.
This home was featured in the July 1969 issue of National Geographic magazine, a favorite of mine. That issue's story, San Diego Where California was Born 200 Years Ago, also described the Flip Ship.

As summer approaches, so many great ideas here at the kh bbs to get out and explore. My favorite is just up the coast in Del Mar! A Kentucky event will lead you to this other jewel of the coast!

On another note, This photo may show the longest "funicular" for a private residence.
There is a very wonderful funicular in Capitola, CA.....

That house has been there for at least 38 years. It seems sturdy!
