Update - Added all the storms in one KMZ document.

Update - I've added a legend as a screen overlay to each kmz decade. By default it's on, but you can easily turn it off by unchecking the legend box at the top of the folder tree. I've updated all of the kmz's as well on the download page .

Using the databse provided at NOAA's Coastal Services Center ( NOAA CSC ) I made a series of kmz's that show all storm tracks, as well as various storm information at each observation. Since there was such a huge amount of data, I split it up by decade first, and secondarily by year... so I have a separate kmz for each decade. I've attached only 1 of the kmz files, but the rest can be found here . I hope you guys enjoy it, and I hope I can find the time to update/improve it.

[Edit] Here's a screenshot showing all 1961 storms observations and stormtracks. Of course the screenshot doesn't show all of the data at each observation, but you can click around and find out.

Regards,

Paul

[Edit] - updated links and images to new locations. Regenerated historical tracks.

This is very nicely done!

Lots and lots of data here. Click on and off each year subfolder for more clarity.

Thanks equitas...much appreciated. One of the problems in fact was that there was "lots and lots of data". I ended up arbitrarily picking decades, and subsequently single years to divide it up. I think my next plan is make a query based web service that will send you back a kmz file based on parameters such as intensity, location, date ranges, etc., and/or combinations thereof. For example....

I want all category 3 or 4 hurricanes that passed within 100 miles of New Orleans between 1970 and 1985. (but through a UI)

And then have it return a kmz based on that query. Much work to be done. I'm scouring the web for more nice datasets....they're hard to find for free.

Paully

You do all that and I'll find a way to give you six stars.

Yes, exellent job! You've put a nice look on a lot of data. I like your idea
for creating search-based feedback. That would be great.

Here is my hurricane track for the ongoing Hurricane Emily.

pseabury,

You have done an outstanding job with this. This is an extremely large ammount of data that is put together very well.
Care to share any of your secrets in converting the data?

Thank you mcshea98. I write code for a living, so I just put together a quick C# app that parses the data, writes the kml, then zips everything up into kmz's. It was a good excercise in learning kml as well. I made my share of mistakes, but the key is knowing what the kml can really do for you. Google made it pretty easy.

Thanks Tommy. As indicated in the original post, I've updated it a bit. Sorry I'm no artist, but I think the legend helps out a bit.
