Actually, its extremely clear water. The deep blue big lake to the east is a deep lake.

The white colour of the material around the lake is tufa - a material precipitated by hydrothermal springs. The dark material is patches of vegetation growing in the lake - perhaps mounding sedge. This region has several cold and warm springs because of recent volcanic activity in the last 10,000 years.
