Are these very large crop circles or is there a more sensible explanation :-)

I posted the same thing a while ago, and some one replied and said it is a irrigation system.

Centre pivot irrigation.. Seen a thread with some good examples in Arabia.

We have these in Australia as well. They are crop circles, well actually circular crops. They are watered (irrigated) by extremely large boom sprinklers, which are anchored at the centre and slowly rotate, describing a neat circle of lush growth. The different colour sectors are caused by partial harvesting of the crop.

More big irrigation systems. Though why anyone would do this in the middle of the desert is beyond me. These are peppered throught the globe. I've seen them everywhere. But WHAT are they doing in the desert? Anyone actually BEEN there?

John,

I've been there, grew up about 30 miles from the 'crop circles'. The units are called center pivot irrigation systems as stated above. Composed of 1/8 mile lengths of pipe supported by 6' diameter steel wheels at even intervals along it's length, the assembly rotates around a well head located at the center of the field (often 1/4 mile by 1/4 mile - sometimes larger), powered by the flow of water through the pipe. The water sources are ancient, deep underground reservoirs called aquifers, sometimes thousands of feet below the surface and, until recently, replenished by heavy winter snows and summer thunderstorms.

The irrigated crop is often feed corn, though a great amound of alfalfa (also feed), soybeans and other crops are irrigated in this area. The remaining area around theses fields is covered in various grasses, buffalo grass, blue grama, fescue and others and is home to lot's of free range beef, though no-one out there would ever use that word.

As to your question about why someone would do these in the middle of a desert:
1) this area is far from being a desert, I've lived in deserts and this, Mr. Robinson is no desert. If you look farther east from this location you will see a patchwork of rectangular fields tapering to the south and west and coming to a narrow point near the junction of I-70 & hwy 86. The green areas in these patchwork and others around this area and east, into central Kansas are (mostly) winter wheat, a dryland (non-irrigated crop) which grows to a lush green carpet about 30" high by the 3rd week of June. Not exactyl desert vegetation. Other areas, depending on the soil type and seasonal rainfall may have clover and/or prarie grass waist deep by the fourth of July (though such growth is exeptional), which is either grazed by cattle or cut and baled to be fed during the winter.
Many of the areas that are not green on the google earth map are that way because they were photographed either during the winter or during particularly dry years when the native grasses were dormant or stunted. In early June or late May the area is often green from horizon to horizon.

2) what else are you going to do in a desert?

Interesting to note that the water levels in these aquifers are dropping to the point that many of these center pivot systems are going out of service.

rjc

As many of you have written previously, the strange circles are crops that grow more vividly when irrigated.
I saw these strange circles for the first time back in 1976 when i flew over the Midwest for the first time on my way to Denver Colorado. Since I came from Denmark, where irrigation then was very scarce, I knew nothing of what it was. Today I still find it odd that crops are grown in such circles. Why not use a method of irrigation that makes it possible to grow crops in the corners of the field? In Denmark irrigation is being used today to boost the groth of primarily potatoes. The cost of land in this small country is much too high to let the corners of a field lay barren.

I liked your reply to the question of the area being a desert. At first i thought I had misunderstood where in the word we looking. But to my knowledge we were watching the eastern part of Colorado, that certanly is no desert!
I'm sad to hear that the waterlevel is dropping. But I guess it had to happen some time, sooner og later.
Back in the '70ties the farmers also used to spray the clouds to make the rain fall. What effects that has had on the natural percepation i know not. Do any of you?

Well, there would be no point putting expensive irrigation systems where there was adequate rainfall, would there? These systems enable agri projects in arid conditions, using water pumped up from below ground, and are more efficient than the traditional systems which rely on labour intensive methods to flood the fields with the same ground water..
