ComputaMaps has produced a 3d model of Downtown Vancouver, BC which we will be showcasing at GeoWeb 2006, http://www.geoweb.org July 24-28.
The model contains almost 5000 objects, including several landmark buildings (textured using the new GE 4 features), such as: . The Science World building - a 155 foot tall geodesic dome! One Wall Centre - voted the world's best new skyscraper in 2001 Morris Wosk Centre - 4 story glass atrium, the GeoWeb conference venue

Kudos to the guys at Computamaps for this nice Vancouver collection of 3D models. You got written up at Google Earth Blog.

yes excellent work without a doubt, the filesize is a major factor considering the amount of objects.
tools? automation, possibly such as an ESRI export to SU or kml soruced from a relational database holding polygon attributes (height, color, elevation etc)
my guess would be it is a geo-refferenced arcscan (scanned image, raster lines converted to polygons)
If you turn the model on/off you will notice a registration error of building footprint to GE's Aerial offset. Possibly due to GE SU .kmz export or some other projection error such as GE terrain elevations, geo-referencing error in conjunction with orthographic / oblique views
this model reminds me of promotional adds by ESRI such as those shown at the ArcGIS Explorer Showcase , big difference here being single color for the indidvidual building.
In ESRI's Los Angeles Model , building structure annexe's and roof top objects differ in color on many buildings
this textured model with representations to symbolize features and single user file_geodatabase's (acgis9.2 enhancements) will add new dimensions to the development of 3D Globe Documents(.3dd). ESRI's ArcGlobe was released around 6 years ago and their new release of ArcGis Explorer will provide "spatial analaysis" along and .kml support.

Excellent! Thanks for sharing this.
IMO this idea of using strong colours with spot texturing for landmark structures is the way forward for large scale GE models.
Hey Google, get these guys in to give your GE 3d buildings a facelift!

example placemark for questions in this post: parcels under 1 acre in moorehead, Mn. (12,463 parcels / filesize 1.5meg) datasource & credits: http://www.gis.co.clay.mn.us/
(edited 4-24, dropped db from model, parcel pgon extruded in meters based on shape file db acerage field)
To be presenting this in the future, you have posted the initial model in a good place for feedback and questions.
I am curious if you have tried exporting from a gis app. to kml without getting boundary offset errors.
I have noticed at 0 elev. or near 0 elevation boundary line offset errors to GE projections from esri exports decrease.
for example in the middle of the gulf of mexico, i can measure from a lat/lon pt to a oil lease boundary (esri pt. & pgon export to kml) and end up will little if any error within GE
In GE at other global locations errors increase in some instances dramatically.
any idea why ?
note boundary errors in the attached placemark views N, S, E, W.
within ESRI the parcel shape file along with aerial(mrsid), fit like the edges of a newly pressed book. whereas in GE bldg structures of the GE aerial do not fall within the parcel boundaries of the ESRI export.
projections: UTM, WGS, PLSS all the same within ESRI, like thread through the eye of a needle.
any idea why within GE the offset occurs?
