Hi
What are these three ships doing there? And why is there so much smoke? One burning and two evacuating and extinguishing the fire??
Other ideas?

That scene does not look good at all. Another ship I marked seems to be racing to help from the port.

There's actually 2 ships there, the one seeming to be going towards the "burning" ship, and one racing the opposite direction.

That is very interesting. There are 3 chips on site, you can see the marks on the sea surface the other two made to reach there. There is this fourth fast ship going towards and another going away. It really worths the effort to seach for such coordinates accident in the recent past, perhaps back to two years will be ok. Someone knows how to search for some boat accidents in that region? some public search website for such thing?

Activating the DG Coverage Overlay for 2004 shows that the image was acquired 2004-08-11, so this information could help finding the incident. I cannot reach digitalglobe at the moment, but the link to the image is http://archive.digitalglobe.com/archive/showBrowse.php?catID=101001000329E501

The burning boat is Eyrarröst KE-25 there was only one man on board, he was rescued by one of the boats responding to the smoke...

When that magic moment comes and you anticpate now is the time to post be enlightened by prior travellers and gain their wisdom. Turn on the BBS layer and if no blue icon appears you are one step nearer to WOW!!! Go to the main index and search on key words. Then with certainty you got a winner.

Here's a rough translation of the news item referred to:
A man was rescued by a nearby boat after his boat had caught fire around noon today.
The Coast Guard control center monitored a call at 12:30 that black smoke was visible 7 nautical miles west of Gardskagi peninsula. The Coast Guard rescue helicopter was called out. The Iceland Defence Force happened to have a helicopter ready for takeoff and this flew directly to the spot at the request of the Coast Guard.
At 12:45 a report was received from the fishing boat Fusi SH162 that the smoke came from a boat and that one man was in the sea wearing a flotation suit. The boat was Eyrarrost KE25 from the port of Keflavik.
When the Defence Force helicopter arrived the man had been rescued from the water by the crew of Fusi who brought him to land for medical attention. The two helicopter then returned.

could it be that an oil tanker caught fire but now all you see is the dense smoke and what looks like a fire is the vent from the oil platform

Actually... yes. The code jockeys are working on that, though.

Now here's a challenge for anyone willing to take it up although I don't know if it's possible.
Can anyone find the Helicopters involved in the rescue?

I happen to be the captain of the Rescue Cruiser Hannes Th Hafstein speeding out to help.
It was a rather small fibre plastic boat that caught on fire.
Luckily the man onboard was rescued by a nearby fishingboat, the one you see speeding to port near the rescue cruiser.
When we arrived onscene everything able to burn was burnt and small shell floating. We managed to put out the fire, in attempt to tow the boat to shore for investigation reasons, but nearby boat destroyed the mission with clumsy attempts to tow it with out our approval. It sank on site.
Cheers,
Captain Agnar Juliusson, ICE-SAR Rescue Cruiser Hannes Th Hafstein - Sandgerdi

My husband retired from the Iceland Defense Force last August and I'm glad to see that they have done something besides paperwork! Seriously, they did work on SAR over there with the Icelandic fire & rescue. He misses it already.
