3d model of Saturn for Google Earth v4beta - 1.7MB
This is a 3d textured model of Saturn created using Blender (for the globe texture mapping) and Google SketchUp, that's been scaled up so it completely encases the Google Earth Globe. I guess you could call it the brute force method of displaying imagery and data on Google Earth.
The benefit of doing this rather than using an overlay, is that I've been able to accurately model the oblateness of Saturn - i.e. the fact it has a 10% shorter polar diameter than equatorial diameter.
The rings use a PNG texture created in Paintshop Pro. This 3k PNG file contains both colour and transparency mapping.
Thanks to Valery35 for the polygon Saturn rings idea.

By far the best depiction of Saturn yet. Just like Celestia.

Many thanks Hill , glad you enjoyed it!
I actually just downloaded Celestia for the first time a couple of days ago, after reading some recommendations on the Mars forum. Makes a great companion to GE.
Interestingly, I see, it's possible to create add-on 3d models, textured overlays etc for Celestia, just like with GE. Although I guess it doesn't need another Saturn

Hi syz,
Which version are you on? It loads fine with me.
The previous versions included a bug. I dont know whether it has been fixed. The problem was with the IE cache. Clearing IE cache and then saving (not opening) the placemark to the harddisk and then opening it was loading the textures well.
If it is not fixed and if you are on the latest version, this may help.
