The historical significance of the An-2 is its legendary status as a workhorse over a span of half a century even though the biplane might have been considered a throw-back to 1920s technologies at the time of its introduction in the mid 1940s. Several models of the An-2 were built in the Soviet Union at Kiev-Svyetoshino and Dolgoprudny through the early 1960s, but by mid-decade, only the An-2M model was still built in the country. China and Poland built models by the thousands and production of subsequent versions by SAMC in China and PZL in Poland continues today. 5

The An-2 Colt has been used as a paratroop transport, glider tug, navigation trainer, utility transport and light bomber. Despite being a versatile and adaptable machine, the large, fabric-covered An-2 biplane remains firmly rooted in much earlier days of aviation. The An-2 prototype was first flown on August 31, 1947, and the aircraft is still in production, although the Antonov Bureau has not produced any since 1960. The An-2s designer, Oleg Antonov, had been an aircraft designer during the Second World War. He then formed his own bureau with the intention of creating an aircraft capable of almost any task. He succeeded. Originally designed for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the former Soviet Union, the aircraft was soon adopted by the Soviet Air Force and built for its client states. It is ideally suited to less developed countries because it requires little maintenance and is easy to fly. Warbird alley.com 9

The Antonov An-2M is one of the largest single reciprocating engine biplanes in the world and is still a highly successful utility aircraft after a fifty-year production run. It was designed and first flown in 1947 by the then Soviet aircraft manufacturer Antonov, located at Kiev in the Ukraine, as an agricultural aircraft and a replacement for the Polikarpov Po-2. More than 18,500 of these airplanes have been produced, many under license by Poland and China. It is a simplistically designed airplane with fabric-covered wings and tail planes and a semi-monocoque aluminum fuselage. It is capable of performing diverse missions while carrying large payloads in and out of primitive fields in virtually any kind of weather conditions, including the temperature extremes of Siberian winters and Kazakstan summers. Its principal uses have included: military service, 12-passenger transport for Aeroflot, freighter with a payload of more than 4,000 pounds, aerial reconnaissance and photography, weather observation, agricultural spraying, forest fire water bomber and as a seaplane on floats. There were, no doubt, many other uses made over its long life. Almost all the Eastern Bloc countries used this airplane in several of these roles during its long operational history. Smithsonian

An-2 was initially developed as an agricultural aircraft. Hence, the initial project name was SKh-1 (Selskoe Khozaistvo - Agriculture). The world's largest single engine biplane, the 1000 hp radial engine and 60 foot wingspan allow short field take offs and landings. The first prototype flew on August 31, 1947, and the aircraft went in production in 1949. Over 5000 were built. The AN-2 Colt provides combat support and combat service support to include reconnaissance, airborne or airland resupply as well as airborne insertion of detachments. The crew consists of two pilots and can accomodate eight passengers. The AN-2 is night capable but the cockpit is not adapted for NVG use. The Y-5 is Chinese copy of the Antonov An-2. China began producing the AN-2 aircraft in the early 70s and it is still used by the North Korean military for troop transport. The An-3 is modification of the An-2 airplane, powered by a TVD-20 turboprop engine with the AV-17 three-blade propeller. The An-3 has new crew cabin design, heating and ventilation equipment, electrical engineering, flight/navigation equipment, alarm system, anti-fire equipment, and be used in the following versions: cargo, cargo/passenger, agricaltural, extinguishing forest fire, ambulance. The biplane are rectangular-shaped with curved tips, with one high-mounted and one low-mounted (shorter), connected and braced by two struts. A single radial piston engine (some versions are turboprop) is mounted in the nose. The fuselage is Short and thick with solid, blunt nose, a stepped cockpit, and fixed landing gear. The tail fin is tapered with a large, round tip. The flats are low-mounted on the tail fin and rectangular-shaped with curved tips. GlobalSecurty.org
