I work with the NGA Prototype Global Shoreline map files extensively. They were extracted from Landsat ETM+ 2000 imagery by EarthSat (now MDA Federal). These map files show the most precise global shorelines. My blogsite, EVS-Islands , has had a number of discussions concerning these map files. Today, an unidentified party, visited my site wanting information on how one might convert these files into KML/KMZ format. I didn't have any current information so, I figured I would go ahead and give it a try. I used my mapping software, Global Mapper , to convert a portion of the PGS database, Region 6W - Pacific Islands, into KMZ format. The KMZ packet is 1.94mb. And you know, it works just fine. Any feedback would be appreciated.

These are wonderful.
How can we get more?
Should these be moved to the Tools forum as a permanent download asset?

John, The Prototype Global Shoreline (PGS) was developed by EarthSat (now MDA Federal) for NGA. It will become the replacement for World Vector Shoreline (WVS) (1:250,000). It is an approximation of the High Water Line, but it is not a Mean High Water Line. Read the White Paper for further information. The base imagery was Landsat ETM+ 2000 . According to one of the primary workers on this project, over 3,000 man-years were invested in this vector shoreline. I have a number of discussions and comparisons of the NGA PGS with other shorelines on my blogsite, EVS-Islands .
