I have a model to share, but some questions first
      #543838 - 08/04/06 09:32 PM

I recently completed a model of the 007 film stage at Pinewood Studios in England, and the final version is 7.28 MB. It lags on my PC and in GE, plus takes about a minute to completely load. I just want to know if it's my problem or if it's going to be the same way for most other people who try to view it... And two more things:

Are there any tricks to make the file size smaller in SketchUp, like making everything one component or something like that?

How do I make it a .kmz file to upload here?

I'll attach the model to this thread if I can get these questions answered easily. Thanks.

The GE lag and loading time will depend on the spec of their system. So it's difficult to say.... but yes, probably...

kmz file size is directly related to the amount of geometry in the model - numbers of edges and faces + size of textures. I don't think grouping entities makes any difference.

But some things you could try, to reduce the size:

Hide any edges the model doesn't need. It's easiest to do this if you're using the wireframe view in SU.

Remove any unnecessary internal structure.

Compress any custom jpg textures you're using, to decrease their file size. This will need to be done outside of of SketchUp. I use IRfanview for this.

Avoid using the built in SketchUp components - trees, people etc. These are all high geometry. Not really optimized for Google Earth.

Save the file as a kmz in Google Earth. Select it (under your temporary places folder) -> right click - save as.

...or export it as a kmz from SketchUp.

The model looks great from the pic you've posted. Fits in well with the surrounding GE imagery.
Nice and topical too.
