I visited the White Cliffs Solar-Steam Power station in 1989 and the array of dishes with sparkling mirrors was an impressive visual treat.

The power station was built in 1978 by the Australian National University and it worked on the principle of concentrating sunlight onto a point where steam was super-heated to drive a turbine.

Some of the dishes were pointing downwards for servicing when I visited and as a group of us stood listening to the tour guide, the point of concentrated sunlight gradually moved across the ground and crept up on an american tourist - who suddenly leapt away as her bum got burnt!
