Oh--I just googled "navaid" and it has something to do with airplanes and navigation and radio and stuff...I now know what it is. It's that big red and white transmiter tower that I drive by each day.

It is a longwave radio beacon used by the Greater Rochester International Airport, broadcasting a continuous "RO" in morse code on 400 kilohertz. Many incoming flights line up on Elmwood Avenue on their landing approach, and this beacon can assist them in doing so. It has been a feature at the base of 590 at Elmwood Avenue for over 35 years, although the antenna was replaced probably 15 years ago.
When we lived on Valley Road, the old antenna caused interference on VHF Channel 5, but that stopped when the antenna was replaced.
Now I live three doors away from it and there is no real interference except on AM car radios when you are stopped at the light by the bridge, when you can occasionally hear its morse code identifier punching through.

Guys it is a DVOR (Radar for BEIRUT Airport)
DVOR (Doppler Very High Frequency Omni-Range)
DVOR is the basic Electronic navigation that in use today. That is an aircraft flies from one DVOR to another.
This DVOR navigation method relies on ground based transmitters which emitted signals to DVOR receiver in the aircraft. The DVOR system operates in the VHF frequency band, from 108.0 to 117.95 MHz. For optimum operation the aircraft must be on the minimum altitude of 1000 feet above ground in order to pick up an Omni signals service range.
Most VOR stations also have distance-measuring equipment (DME). A display indicator in the aircraft reads the signals and tells the pilots if they are on course and how far they are from the station. VOR-DME systems are limited in range to 160 miles and can only provide direct courses to or from a given station.

Navaid marked vor at Sydney int'l airport is actually a DVOR. They use DVOR because it gives the planes a more accurate distance than conventional DVOR. I used to work on this stuff.

I live adjacent to this site... in town house with grey roof north west top of this site. There is no signage whatsoever on the site and thanks for the information. Always thought it was something to do with aircraft as this is the main flight path for Adelaide Airport.

Heamit, I completely agree with you!!! GE is covered with non-information, redundant information, or techno-speak that looks like a private joke. I usually turn off the Community layer, since so many i's don't tell me what I want to know...such as WHAT, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE, AM I LOOKING AT? I learn more by sending locations to my 86 y.o. dad.

just cause you didnt get it, doesnt mean we are all ignorant, he plays Microsoft flight simulator 2004, he has pointed out the nav points that he would tune the navigation radios into, for simulation of flight, its fun actually. Notice the amount of downloads, obviously not everyone agrees with you.
However if you want to talk about meaningless c on google earth, them stupid confluence points are the worst monster of them all, and i think the should be deleted.

Well we can agree to disagree then on the usefulness of these points. Personally, I think thousands and thousands of blue "i"s all over the globe for a computer game is over the top but as you point out there are others who like them.
I do agree with you, however, regarding those confluence points. But did you know that you can turn them off by looking at your "Layers" and going to "Google Earth Community" then "Community Showcase" and then un-check "Confluence Placemarks"! 
Now if only it were that easy to get rid of, ummm, this lot ...

Hey, freddofrog. I saw this subject in the main index and was wondering what it was talking about. Yeah, part of me is saying it is a sensless post but part of me is saying that it is a good post. I just don't understand why he would put something for Flight Simulator on google earth. I mean, not to be rude but most people don't really care. I am kind of intrested in it. Actually, I have a question. Will these things work for Flight Simulator 2002, because that is the game I have. Thanks.

They are actual navigation points and VOR frequencies that work with any simulator, or real planes for that matter. Not that I would trust them if I were really flying. But its easy to have Google Earth open while using your flight sim 2002 included, and makes it easy to navigate! This is a community of people you guys are under estimating, and this is actually assisted by google earth!

You only need to look at the downloads (15,542!!!) to appreciate that its not pointless to more than you think, compare that to the thousands of posts with but a few downloads; like-my home/school and all that bother.
But if you look at any airport on Google earth, you will find that every one of them has the Airport name/ICAO/and freq marked on them by some one. Just like you call New York NY, a pilot will call Melbourne International ‘YNML’ what you call it depends on the community you are from, and being the Google earth community it fits!
Heamit, I guess thats an argument getting to what Google Earth is actually for in the first place? A bit of fun? 'I' for information? Flight Sim also being fun? and getting Info from Google right? By the way the post is under 'sports/hobbies' which is appropriate too.
Thanx for letting me know i can turn that Filter off because i WILL turn that one off, I cant stop thinking of the expended rescources time and money used in that project.

This kmz is great, although there might still be an even better way to do this. I am not a pilot (ground school only) although I use FS and X-Plane.
Here's an example from the 'get a life' category:
I travel for a living and make several cross-country flights a week. To keep me entertained, I always have a window seat, carry a satellite radio receiver and sometimes take my aeronautical sectionals with me. I listen to the cockpit communications and try to match up what I hear with what I see on the ground.
Its always a pain (although fun!) to try and match the comms to where I am in the world with only a map . However, you cant see the VORs from the plane! (e.g 'Direct to Linden', 'Direct to Needles', 'Direct to Willow')
Plus, unfolding the sectionals while sitting in my seat annoys the other passengers. They are big and crinkle really loud when I open/orient them. So with GoogleEarth I can just look at my screen, orient the direction onscreen and look down at the ground to match up what I see.
Now I can plot my routes in-flight, look ahead to where we are flying and note any interesting things I want to see from 35000ft. A lot of times I look down and see some really cool surface feature and think 'If I only knew exactly where this was, then one day I could drive to where it is and see it from the ground."
As a bonus, now I dont have to go buy new sectionals for everywhere I travel or when I leave them in my seatpocket!

These are all aeronautical navigational aids. For the most part all you'll see is a small shack and some form of antenna. They are for helping planes navigate the airways.

I know many people like these things, but every time I go to a map, there are hundreds of these things. Is there a way to create a different layer and move all of these to that layer?
Right now they are in Sports and Hobbies. We travel around the country with our teams, and when we try to find different ball fields and places of interest in our travels, we get 100 of these NAVAID things that pop up. If you turn off the Sports layer, then the ball fields, stadiums, tracks, etc get turned off too.
This may have 15,000 downloads, but there are millions of people who use this. If there were maybe a handful or two of these things, it wouldn't be a nuisance.

Hello,
My many relatives live there. Sertavul Airport is very famous around it locally. At the beginning when I saw your placemark I got angry like HAEMIT . I thought that "what will you do my airport as a foreigner" But when I read your thread I learned first time Microsoft Flight Smilutor 2004 by means of your thread. When I first read two years ago I couldn't set up this game because of limited internet connections in Turkiye. Now I redownloaded its set up.exe. I hope I manage this time..
