Hi all,
I've searched the forum quite a bit and I can't find the answer to this though I'm sure it must be quite simple.
I have been using Google Earth v3 for some time, and trying to upgrade to v4 beta at each new release.
The problem is that after initially opening the view of Earth just fine, and scrolling around for a bit, after anything from 30 seconds to 3 minutes, the screen will go completely blank, "Eye alt" will display "-1.#j", and nothing short of exiting the program can bring back a view of anything. I've tried with OpenGL and DirectX and it makes no difference. This occurred on the June release, and I assumed it was just a bug in the new version which would be ironed out. So I installed the September release and it's just the same problem. The program seems to have no geographic information when it brings up this screen, as if I click on anything in the "places" panel, it just brings up a dialog as if I was viewing it on the black screen, and doesn't scroll to it at all.
There is no problem under v3, so I have gone back to that at the moment. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am using an Nvidia Geforce 6600GT graphics card in an Athlon X2 3800+ PC.
Thanks

Hi
Maybe one of your placemarks has been corrupted. What happens when you move the "myplaces.kml" file to your desktop before initializing GE?
The file can be in two folders depending on your previously-used versions: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth and/or C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth

I'm afraid that's not it. I thought it was at first. I reinstalled, and it worked fine for the first session, but had the problem again when I reloaded. I deleted myplaces.kml and associated files, and reloaded, but it seems to recreate this file each time. In any case each time I reloaded, the screen went blank within a minute of starting to scroll around, going again to eye alt "-1.#J".
Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas?

I have exactly the same problem AND a Dual Athlon too.
So, this made me think and I set affinity to googleearth.exe to 1 processor only and THAT WORKED! At least for the moment :-)
(TaskManager, Processes Tab, rightclick process 'googleearth.exe', 'Set Affinity', select 1 processor only)
Cheers FT

Thanks for that, I have asked the good community members over at the AMD forums to see if they can come up with a permanent solution.

This doesn't work for me... After inicializing program work properly until I zoom to some Eye alt (less then 5000 km). Then the program just stops responding

Well, it definitely worked for me and is still working. But I see you have an Intel whereas the others and I were talking about a Dual Athlon. Could be related, don't know.
Sorry I can't be of more help...

Fantastic! Worked like a charm!
Thanks very much for this!
I hope this can go in a FAQ somewhere.
