CHELYABINSK, Russia
For forty-five years, Chelyabinsk province of Russia was closed to all foreigners.Only in January of 1992 did President Boris Yeltsin sign a decree changing that.Shortly afterwards, I made my first trip to this region, which later Western scientists declared to be the most polluted spot on earth. In the late 1940's, about 80 kilometers north of the city of Chelyabinsk, an atomic weapons complex called "Mayak" was built. Its existence has only recently been acknowledged by Russian officials, though, in fact, the complex, bordered to the west by the Ural Mountains, and to the north by Siberia, was the goal of Gary Powers's surveillance flight in May of 1960. The people of the area have suffered no less than three nuclear disasters: For over six years, the Mayak complex systematically dumped radioactive waste into the Techa River, the only source of water for the 24 villages which lined its banks. The four largest of those villages were never evacuated, and only recently have the authorities revealed to the population why they strung barbed wire along the banks of the river some 35 years ago.Russian doctors who study radiation sickness in the area estimate that those living along the Techa River received an average of four times more radiation than the Chernobyl victims.

This woman "Elena" calls herself the "Kidd of Speed". Her father is a nuclear research scientist who monitors the Chernobyl area for the Russian gov't. she is a motorcycle fan who rides her Kawasaki Ninja through the Chernobyl area at high rates of speed to avoid being radiated. Her last photo "tour" was in the Spring of 2004. Interesting pictures and story.

Thanks for that Dotrat Guess that we will just keep well away from there then. Are you sure that it is still the most radioactive spot or has it been superceded?

Whether it's been superceded remains to be seen (if we ever hear about it). Take a look at this and then think about it. http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/research/1281721.html?page=1&c=y

The Yucca mountain project is pretty insane. But we will be funding it and it will be contained.
Chelyabinsk is a plain old wasteland with total disregard for the environment and people. I don't see it being superceded at all. And if for some strange reason it is....well I think that country should feel the wrath of it's neighbors.
Russia should be ashamed for letting this area turn into what it is. There's a really good article about Chelyabinsk out there called "Half Life". NOT THE VIDEO GAME !! I will see if I can track down the link.

Those are really wonderful photos, but the backstory behind them has been shown to be largely fictional. They don't let chicks on bikes ride unaccompanied through the region, no matter who their dad is.
Fourth post in this thread has the LA Times story concerning the fake bits.

Oh great another conspiracy theory.
The photos are accurate.....and seeing how the nuclear plant was handled back in 1986....why is it hard to believe someone actually drove through the area.

That post speaks of one incident.....
Mine covers the entire province as being the most radioactive place in the world due to the "several" incidents that have happened over the course of 50 + years.
And my BBS layers are on
Why has this forum turned into a game of one upmanship??

It's not hard to believe that someone could actually drive through there, but her story doesn't check out.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, btw, I'm a skeptic.

Yes. Conspiracy theorists think they see the effects of large groups of people with hidden objectives and nearly infinite resources.
Skeptics use reason to examine claims.

It's not like I was staying in a decayed hotel there. It was a one-day excursion from Kiev. Highly interesting and touching. By the way, every day still about 3000 people go to work in the Chernobyl atomic site.

Surely you must have exposed your self to contamination. In your photos, your hand is exposed to the elements? How dangerous was it?

You lie! USSR had to build Mayak PA to protect world from you -Americans with yours atom bomb. The community of this villages was evacuated, but they returned according to their own desires. I'm livin' here and I don't have 3 heads and 10 legs! And your "Area 51" is more dangerous than all our atomic objects all together!

Hey sorry to get all the Ruskies in a bunch over there.....but this was named most radioactive place on the planet by Greenpeace. If you like your fluorescent glow ..... well cool.
Just stay right there and have a party.
Area 51 I'm sure has some degree of contamination.......one area to it's north is pretty bad because of some weapons tests. But our government has made efforts to clean up and does not allow farming in the area. Not that the landscape would provide ideal farming conditions to begin with......On that note.....I guess it was a smart move to test there.
Besides....all the strippers in Vegas have big old boobs which Im sure are mutations from all the testing in the area. We planned this too !!

Hey Everyone
This is the most frightening thread I have read in a long while , particularly the report and pictures of Elena's fast journey to and thru Chernobyl. EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT. Thank you, Elena!
I do not see how civilization can survive and grow without the use of atomic energy; it is inevitable that we will continue to use it, increasingly, to supply the energy needed for that survival. Hopefully, we can find a form of atomic energy production which is far safer than the form we now use.
