What is so secret about the little village of Calstock in Cornwall that a mysterious rectangular cloud should hang over it?

It is much too out of place in the entire Cornwall area. It has been added to the Censorship listing in THIS POSTING.

Edited to add here what is noted in the Censorship posting: Calstock is NOT censored in Microsoft's Virtual Earth.

Hello,

I just assumed it was a data problem (maybe no clear image for that area). Either way, it's a shame as you don't get to see the railway viaduct:

Before the image update Calstock was the subject of a quiz in the Fun & Games section, so screenshots can be found here.

Calstock censored --thats mad.

i happen to know the area VERY well. i can not think of anything other than a railway viaduct on a small branch line that could be of any importance.

How can i find out why its been 'censored'

Who does the censoring.?

i spoke to DG and they claim its not them and they just pass the data over to GE
(see reply from DG )

danescombe,

The cloud seems to be too unique to have been a natural happening.

The iimagery for that area is not from DigitalGlobe - it's from GeoInformation Group. Their high-resolution imagery throughout the UK does not have similar solid opaque clouds, except in nearby Plym Bridge, just north of Plympton. Other clouds in the region are wispy and semi-transparent.

It may, indeed, not be censorship, but it certainly gives the impression of a purposful addition to the photography.

My guess looking at the area is that the photography is a mix of different dates. In the vicinity there are cloud shadows visible from clouds that are not visible and some small sections of strong cloud. See east and north of this area for example.

So I think it is simply that this area was left uncovered by cloud free imagery so there was not alternate. You couldn't miss it in quality control it is too obvious. They would also have eliminated the cloud shadow images before producing the ortho if they had the chance.

The edge of the area has the blend effect due to feathering and seam smoothing with the surrounding images. This is also why the edges of the cloud image are not straight.
