The placemarker contains all cows from this thread

Salem Sue (or The World's Largest Holstein Cow) is a large fiberglass holstein cow sculpture located in New Salem, North Dakota. Salem Sue was built in 1974 for $40,000. The project was sponsored by the New Salem Lions Club in honor of the local dairy farming industry. The statue stands 38 feet high and is 50 feet long. It sits on School Hill near Interstate 94 and can be viewed for several miles.

Hi Felippo -

Here's another for your collection. Not a cow, but Babe the Blue Ox, faithful helper to the legendary giant timberman, Paul Bunyan. I had some happy times here as a little kid - located at an old roadside attraction that's still operating, called Trees of Mystery. It's in the Redwoods of California, the tallest trees on earth.

Babe is anatomically correct.

Hello Diane

Thank you very much. I have added Babe the Blue Ox to the collection.

Öehm, hmmm, it seems that the term "Ox" doesn't mean the same in your language as in mine. In germany we would call him "Babe the blue Bull", cause he still has his .

Felippo -

I hadnt' thought about that. I looked it up in Wikipedia, which begins its definition by saying an ox is a draft animal. Then, "Often they are adult, castrated males." Dictionary.com says an ox is "the adult castrated male of the genus Bos, used chiefly as a draft animal." So, apparently, Babe is at least by one definition anatomically correct. Maybe in the macho world of logging Babe would be depicted as still having his...ahem...whether they were there or not!

It certainly makes more sense for them to be castrated, in order to avoid the hassle of having your bull take off to fight with another bull over a cow in heat. That leaves you to pull your own wagon!

Thank you again Masonicmoron . I have added your find to the collection.

Hello Diane

I read the german Wikipedia article about Ox (Ochse) and found something interesting that explains it all. The word Ox (Ochse) has not the same meaning in english and german language. I have tried to translate it.

Quote:

Der Ausdruck Ochse (v. althochdt.: ohso = Samenspritzer; eigtl. Zuchttier) bezeichnet heute ein kastriertes männliches Rind.

"The expression Ochse ( old high german language.: ohso = semen splashes; meaning is - breeding animal) describes today a castrated male cattle.

I don't know why, but the expression Ochse (Ox) has changed it's meaning in german language due the time, from North to South. What once described a breeding animal describes now a castrated animal. Thats very strange.

Best Regards, Felippo
