Im hoping I figured out how to post the placemark right.
Highway 8 also known as "Airport Road" a very dangerous stretch of road that connects the airport to the rest of baghdad. When I was deployed in to Iraq we were responsible for security on the road for a while.
The following pictures were taken at this particular interchange. The first picture is us with some of the Iraqi security forces, the handsome devil on the top right is me. Note the mosque in the background it is to the north of the interchange. The second picture is a convoy headed west down the highway towards the airport.

This must be a pre-war photo? There's a surprising amount of traffic on the highway and none of it looks like its painted in OD.

Actually the 3d sattelite pics of Iraq are prewar, my picture is not. How do I know? There are still HIND helicopters (Iraqi) at the airbase in northern baghdad, not to mention that the american bases and vehicles are nowhere to be seen. Might be that way for security reasons.
That photo was taken during the war, last summer to be exact. The Iraqi people are living their lives again, and there is a TON of traffic over there.

There have been a couple of threads about the age of the Iraq imagery. There are certainly newer images available - some of the airbase images do show US equipment - but it appears that the Baghdad imagery is all pre-war.

You got me, I haven't looked at all of Iraq, but yeah the Baghdad imagery is pre war. Did my placemark show up on the 3d globe?

yeah they have updated the baghdad layer to sometime between midaugust to november of 2004

I agree, judging by the setup at Camp Falcon it definately looks like its been updated to late summer/fall 2004.

Hi, I hope you made your way home safe and sound!
What an unforgettable experience must have been this one for you.
The thing that strikes me most is that from an altitude like the sat images it is all so quite, and you could excange Bagd. with any other city in the world, but on the ground it can turn to be such a hell...

Paul_ArmyTanker: I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your posts here and on the Google_Earth mapping program.
Q&A: Is there a generalized list of all military / soldier posts of points of interest somewhere ... other than the Google_Earth map itself?

Ya the current overlay has to be prewar unless they bulldozed all the trees that were at the center of the intersection (Spagetti Junction) or to those like myself who were there when we incaded.

however I havent been in Iraq since late 2003.

I can show you numerous locations of American bases throughout the southern and north east region that are updated as late as 2006-2007. My brother is stationed at one of them. Not all of Iraq is prewar.
