Earth Impact Cratering Tour
      #71111 - 08/15/05 01:06 PM

View in Google Earth         View in Google Maps (37571 downloads)

I have compiled a complete tour of all the known impact sites on earth from the Earth Impact Database including a few overlays.
Please let me know if there are any problems and if you have better data for some of the more obscure craters.

I would welcome any feedback from those of you who have tried it, both positive and negative. Replies in this thread would encourage me to continue the work.

If you wish to keep the download up to date keep checking back on this post. I am making regular updates to the tour.
Even better you could toggle it as a favourite thread and then receive an email when it is updated.

I have made a few extra modifications to the tour including new/extra overlays and removed the Sirente - Italy crater which has been proven to be non meteoritic in nature.
Keep checking the postings here as I shall be updating the tour as and when new data and images appear.
Instead of posting the tour separately I shall edit the existing post and notify as a reply.
Keep watching the skies.

Thhanks for this magnificent piece of work. I have long been a fan of the World Crater Inventory. My first comment is about the first crater Acriman.

In your tour you zoom in on 20Km wide Lake Acriman which is really just the a portion of the crater which extends to Lake Gardiner.

Also some of the overlays are not loading properly.

Thank you again for the beautiful piece of work.

Thank you for the compliment Johan. I am really pleased that you like it.

Regarding Acraman I shall rectify the tour to better reflect the size of the crater in my next update. I intend to inlcude a lot more overlays in future updates as and when I can find them. Amguid is one where I have a great picture of the crater taken from a BA jet but I have as yet been unable to match up the photo with the surrounding landforms.

Regarding the problem seeing the overlays, I have found that when the tour is first downloaded not all of the overlays load up correctly but when Google Earth is restarted they tend to load up ok. I would like to hear if this is the case for you.

Keep checking back for further updates.

I have updated the Tour and it now includes a folder containing all the known fall sites for the Campo Del Cielo in Argentina plus a new overlay for Mount Toondina in Australia.

I like the changes very much. The overlays are loading perfectly and add very much to the experience. I particularly find the addition of the russian platinum mine interesting something that at first glance appears to be umistakeably an impact structure. A database of structures that look like they resulted from impacts but in fact are not would make a useful companion to this tour. I have started seeing circles everywhere.

I did read about six months ago some very strong critiques of Becker et al's claims for Bedout, but I admit I have not taken the time to look for a responce.

Equaly interesting but even more difficult to prove are the claims of gigantic impact structures in Antartica. A subject that interests me as I have a few Australites in my possesion which could have originated there. Others claim there is a large structure in Cambodia that is there source. I will have to wait on that. At least I have your Updates you seem to bring out a new one before I get time to finish the tour.

Thankyou once again.
