We here at @Last Software love Google Earth and think the 3D building feature is very cool, but couldn’t help but notice the heinous omission of any data for Boulder! We decided it was time to rectify that situation and give everyone else a birds-eye view of Boulder, CO and the @Last World Headquarters (home of SketchUp)…

This is fabulous.

What I especially like is the way the model files are organized, which makes it possible to change colors and opacity in Google Earth.

The kmz was probably one lump sum export, with the file structure remaining intact. While we can't do that with the current free plugin furnished here, there is a workaround that will allow the kind of complexity the Boulder model shows.

In developing a SketchUp version of the Salgado exhibit at The Leonardo to replace the earlier version posted here, I'm using the Google Earth plugin for SketchUp to export each subfolder separately. This works because SketchUp references everything in the scene with the same coordinates. The Petrichor exporter for 3DS, by contrast, currently references each separately exported element by local coordinates, so they don't stay together.

That said, I'm really looking forward to the day when SketchUp makes available an onboard kml export tool.

Holy crap, that's a lot of work. Even using SketchUp.

BTW, SketchUp rocks.

I think Google Earth and SketchUp are both incredible apps, however, I have to nominate both for the special award:

"Most lifetime wasting potential short of a holodeck" award.

I could easily spend days with those two products alone.

Amazing.

It's a beautiful rendering. And a great idea for your town. No one else has reported problems, but I had sever navigation difficulties with your kmz turned on. GE kept adjusting my view tilt as if I were bumping into mountains beneath me. I did some interesting bouncing around before I had to turn you off. Great render on your storefront.

Gidday

Looks great! In fact the importer of .shp files and exporter of kml files works really well for my home town.. But, I have 3D buildings and I cannot for the life of me find how I can put them onto layers so they can be turned off when I want to view the aerial photos. I am also trying to figure out how I set up the same viewing conditions as for the Boulder area or even the Grand Canyon - i.e the really detailed images of the ground only load when I am close enough that they are visible.

yar,

each group or component geometry will come across in the kmz as a new folder.

so....

while in SketchUp, group the geometry of you building/ buildings and then export out.

When in GE, just click on and off the geometry.

As for views....

you can set those in GE by right clicking on the kmz or any sub folder and select the Snapshot.

In SketchUp, set your page views and on export they will be tranfered over into the kmz. They will be under the TOUR folder.

Have fun

Gidday again

I am perhaps missing something. What I am interested to be able to do is click the 3D buildings layer and have the 1600+ buildings (currently labelled building 1 through 1600+ - but I know what to do about that!) turn on / off - as layers in GE, not as objects in my places folder? At present your excellent exporter exports 1600 3D entities but they are visible whether or not I click the 3D buildings button / layer visibility option.

Also, while i am at this submit questions level, I have a 3D shp / dxf contour map of 1m spacing contours across the whole city which currently imports into ADT / 3DS Viz / Sketchup or anything else with landscaping options as a simply massive file. I want to be able to draw on this stuff as terrain in GE, not make a many faceted geometry model... Is this an area where your brilliant shp importer / kmz exporter can assist?

Y

May have been posted before...

I did a quick search for Boulder.

Here's two example Quickbird 2 foot examples on the mapmart.com website that I found.

http://www.digitalglobe.com/images/qb/bolder_boulder_racecourse_multispectral_oct15_02_DG.jpg

http://www.digitalglobe.com/images/qb/boulder_cu_stadium_oct15_02_DG.jpg

Now those would definately look rather good under this fabulous model.

I guess I dont have the latest processor or massive memory to compute these buildings. Camera rate is slow. I have a P4(2003 model I guess) with 512MB SDRAM. Is there any simple codeding? From other cities with buildings they are smooth transitions. Also Area 51 is cool but hogs up page file memory bad.

@Last Software:

I too am in love with Google Earth since I discovered it only a few days ago.
I've been a Lightwave 3D modeler and animator for ten years. Can I do some freelance work for you.
I can crank out low polygon models as fast as you order them and you can pay me at whatever rate you want. I don't need a lot of lot of compensation -- It's just that I love 3D work, especially buildings/architecture. As a sample of my work, see the following animation; it features my concept of a new World Trade & Cultural Center:
http://jeffs-icons.com/cgi-bin/load.cgi?http://www.jeffs-icons.com/WTC/JWTC-2.asf

It's a streaming video that runs for 18 minutes and 17 seconds.
