From Google Maps to GE?
      #714792 - 12/11/06 06:33 AM

Something else I''ve forgotten - if I ever knew it

If I'm looking at a place in Google Maps in my browser (such as after successfully searching for a UK road name), what is the quickest way to get to same place in GE please?

Hello,

Here's how I would do it:

First, click on "Link to this page" in the top right; the address bar should turn into something like this:
Code:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=coventry&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=52.476089,-1.533279&spn=0.102048,0.344009&om=1

You'll see in between all the '&' characters the following value pair:
Code:
ll=52.476089,-1.533279

I would then simply paste the two co-ordinates ("52.476089,-1.533279", not the "ll=" bit) into the 'Fly to' box in GE.

If you have a Google account, you can save places but I can't work out any other way of using that data...

Simon.

Thanks Simon, I'll try that.

Meanwhile, experimenting, I hit on what seems to be an even simpler method. When the search is finished in Google Maps, it displays a pop-up. I just pasted the address from that into GE's Fly To Search box, hit Go, and it found it. At least, for the 4 examples I tried. A typical search in Google Maps was 'Dawberrry Fields Road', giving the Address:
Dawberry Fields Road
Birmingham, West Midlands, B14

Yes, I'd expect that it's possible to successfully search for the same things in both applications.

Of course, you could cut out the middle man and just type it into GE to start with

Tried that initially, but GE doesn't accept 'obvious' search targets and Google Maps does. For example, entering 'Dawberrry Fields Road' into Google Maps immediately finds the location. But the same entry in GE gets 'Your search returned no results'.

View in Google Earth         View in Google Maps (182 downloads)

Hmm.... that's odd - it works for me!

The attached placemark was returned.

You still on version 3?

Simon.

Yep, version 3 here. So looks like version 4 improved the search facility?

You can also try this:

Go to your location in Google maps. Then click on 'Link to This Page' in the upper-right corner. The browser window will refresh; the link for your location now appears in your URL/address bar.

Just add '&output=kml' with no quotes or spaces to the end of that address, and hit 'enter'. You'll get a file download box. Click 'open' and it will take you to the location in GE.

Thanks Lucia, but that doesn't seem to work here. Tried it in IE6 as well as my usual Firefox, with same result. I entered a target of
Edwards Road, Birmingham
and selected the first of the 3 choices offered, which displayed the correct location. I then added the suffix you specified, giving
Edwards Road, Birmingham, West Midlands, B24&output=kml
in the URL box. But after pressing Enter I got:
"Did you mean: Edwards Road, Birmingham, West Midlands, B24&output=xml
Your search for Edwards Road, Birmingham, West Midlands, B24&output=kml around this map area did not match any locations..."

But anyway that seems slightly more complex than the simple method I described, which appears reliable.
