30 November 2008 position: Lat / Long: 54.2°S 036.4°W (South Georgia Island)

File is too big for Google Maps

HMS ENDURANCE, pennant number A171, is the Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol Vessel. She deploys each year in the autumn from her base port of Portsmouth in Hampshire, to the cold and ice of the Antarctica austral summer where she carries out her operational duties for the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

Thanks to everyone at the Google Earth Community who took the time to answer my stupid technical questions. I could not even zip a kml file or make a working Network Link when I started this project last year. Also, I owe special thanks to Endurance's Public Outreach Programme, Captain Nick Lambert, Navigating Officer Lee Vessey, and Dr. Anna Nelson of the British Antarctic Survey for their assistance in this project.

Absolutely fabulous post saellis. Fascinating subject, great presentation, lots of information and fantastic photos. An excellent example of how GE can be used for this kind of project.

Just one thing puzzles me, can I ask how it comes about that somebody in Colorado Springs is doing a presentation for the British Royal Navy? Just curious

Thank you for your kind words, Noisette. I'm glad you like it. I first learned of the HMS Endurance from another GEC post by user 'pm77' earlier this year. After doing a search I found that there were no Google Earth projects about the modern HMS Endurance so I started on the project back in November as a way to combat insomnia after working past midnight.

I tried to follow the design of the Visit And Learn website with the idea that the KMZ file would serve as a companion to it. The hardest part of the project has been to find high resolution sattelite images to use as overlays to improve on the basically featureless GE base image. I have a great image of Livingston Island but the copyright is owned by the Bulgarian Antarctic Place-names Commission which has yet to answer my request to use it.

Ah I see You did such a good job of following the design of the website, I thought you must be affiliated to it! Have you contacted them to see if they would be interested in including your file, or linking to your post here on the BBS?

Just prior to posting it here, I had contacted VisitAndLearn so they could review it and also to get permission to use their copyrighted material. They seemed keen on linking to this post. I suggested that the link could be put on their "student links" page so that more students might be introduced to GE.

Still no word from Bulgaria about using their images so I would appreciate it if anyone could direct me to a source of sattelite or aerial images of the Antarctic Peninsula and sub-Antarctic islands, hopefully in the public domain.

Thanks for posting the pics, Scunnin. It looks like the best tour of duty in the Royal Navy.

I can only tell you what he says, its amazing to see the wildlife, the icebergs and the beauty down there. Of course its sometimes pretty rough seas on the way down, but a great tour of duty to go there - here is another link to some pictures of Endurance up close and personal on the way southward in november -
