Smooth Hi-Def realtime capture

Hello

Has anyone managed to capture HiDef footage in real time that is even remotely smooth?

I guess disk usage is the bottle neck and neither my cpu or memory are maxing out.

I've tried various movie formats to make the disk/cpu usage less but it makes no difference.

Anyone any suggestions?
