I've been using GE4 free. Trying to use, that is. It began having this problem for me a few weeks ago. I haven’t found anyone that has had the exact same scenario as mine, or anyone that has had a solution that has helped me thus far.
I do web development work on my machine, so I'm installing different software from time to time. I haven't used GE often enough to be sure of an exact correlation with something else I might have installed or reconfigured that may have caused GE to stop running. However, I’ve tried all the fixes I've been able to find thus far on this forum. So far I have:
Rebooted. Power-cycled my computer. Uninstalled GE, downloaded latest version, reinstalled (many times now). Even uninstalled GE, downloaded previous version, reinstalled. Cleared IE cache. Defragmented hard disk. Deleted old My Places data after uninstall.
Still won't run. I get the GE splash screen, then right after that, GE crashes and I get an error screen that says "Google Earth has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then there is a box that asks "Would you like to send an error report about this problem to Google?" with Yes or No buttons. Then GE freezes so hard it won't even respond to clicking on either of those buttons. Even doing an End Task from Task Manager won't clear it, at that point. Machine specs:
Win XP SP2 (all up to date). AMD 3000+ CPU. 1Gig RAM. GeForce4 MX440 video card (with latest drivers). MS IE7 browser. ZoneAlarm firewall.
Lest anyone get too picky about any of the above, PLEASE NOTE: GE previously ran on this same machine, with the above specs, just fine for many months prior to this recent crashing problem. Everything else I use on my machine still appears to be working fine. Only GE has developed this problem and won’t start up any longer.

Hi and welcome to the GEC.
The first thing that jumps out to me is the Zonealarm and the fact it was working before.
I too have Zonealarm Pro, and have had the same problem twice in the past year. It seems that after the odd update to the firewall it can forget some settings, why? don't know, So the first thing I would suggest is to remake the exceptions Click HERE to see how.
Now, as I said it was the first thing to grab me. If it don't work come back and we shall go further.
If it does work, please let us know, it goes to help others.
Cheers

I appreciate the suggestion. I was wondering if ZoneAlarm would be the first thing suspected. I did not think that was the problem, but just to be sure, I did a shutdown of ZoneAlarm, then reinstalled GE4 again and tried to run it. No joy. GE crashed the same as before, with the same error message I described previously. Too bad that error message isn't more informative, like with some kind of error code included...

Ok, try run this TEST and let us know the results.
Remove GE via "Add/ Remove programs then find the file named "usp10.dll" and delete it.
Re-install GE via THIS LINK .
If the first test is OK on all three, the removal of that dll file and re-installation should do it.
Good Luck.

Hi,
I'm not the original poster, but I have the same symptoms.
The test webpage runs (in IE 7-- not in Firefox) successfully.
Uninstalled. Searched for all copies of usp10.dll -- had to boot in Safe Mode to delete the copy in C:\Windows\System32. Uninstalled GE4. Rebooted. Installed GE 4.0.2737.0 from your link.
Same results, except GE quits with a Windows "exclamation" sound without any dialog, unless I run one of the shortcuts to set to Direct X or Open GL and run from that dialog...then I get the "Encountered a problem..." message.
Anything else to try?

Ok, I tried running that test, and I got the following:
kh.google.com SUCCESSFUL geo.keyhole.com SUCCESSFUL auth.keyhole.com SUCCESSFUL
I had already uninstalled GE. So I removed all occurances of the file usp10.dll from my machine. Then I reinstalled GE via that link you provided. Then I tried to run GE. The result was... the same. It still crashes then freezes in the exact same manner that I originally described. Sorry. I hope there are still more ideas on this.

Mmm, Are you running an Athlon Dual-core processor?
If so, there is a fix. Click on the Technical support link below and on that page there is info for that.

I have already installed the Dual Core Optimizer, with no change in results.
The solution of setting the Processor Affinity (to use only one core) does not help in this case, as GE crashes before there is an opportunity to set the Processor Affinity in the Task Manager.
Update: it is possible to permanently set the processor affinity for an executable from a command line utility. Tried this, but no change in the results. You can find the tool here, for those helped by this strategy:

I found a solution after months of trying out every suggeston I could find through Google searches and GE forums. In my case GE3 would work but GE4 would always crash at startup. I tried over and over again to get GE4 up using every method suggested by users. And, after failing each time, I reinstalled an old copy of GE3.
Finally, I zeroed in on DirectX, really went after it, and had success. Apparently, MS DirectX corruption was the problem. Here's roughly what I did:
1. I unninstalled "Microsoft DirectX (I think it was version SD** ?)". Don't just reinstall or update direct x. Completely uninstall it. 2. I ran "Free Windows Registry Repair" (This is a very nice reg cleaner. Other reg cleaners may work, too.) 3. Restarted. 4. Installed direct X 9.0c. 5. Restared. 6. Installed GE 4 over GE 3. 7. Blam-O-Rama!!! GE4 started just fine.
Hope this works for you all.
