If you go to this placemark and zoom out to a height of 160 miles, you will notice what appears to be an underwater geograhical feature that looks very straight and extends for hundreds if not thousands of miles in either direction. I use Puerto Rico as the starting place because that is where I first noticed it. I thought it was a overlap in satellite imagery but it extends forever and breaks up at points only to pick up again. It extends eastward into the Atlantic and westwards through the Yucatan Peninsula into the Pacific. Forgive my ignorance of geology but what the hell is this? This is my first post so forgive me if this has been mentioned before (I tuned on all the layers and didn't see any reference to this).

It seems much too long to be either natural or man-made. Must be an imaging issue ?

Welcome to GE. Underwater features are artist representations of what the sea floor looks like. There probably is an underwater ridge there. All those features on the sea fllor come from scanners on boats, not satellites. The Measure option in the Tools menu will show that the line is around 230 miles long.

You know, they've done millimeter-wave mapping of the ocean surface and gotten a pretty good outline of the topography beneath it. Perhaps you should consider using that instead of an artist's representation.

Sure it's a long line. If you look carefully, it goes all around the globe. Still think it's a rige ?

Diane's right. I am looking at my old globe right now and that's the seam where I can pull it apart to get my pennies out.

Now to be serious (because sometimes I'm not), That is correct. The representation in the DTM is not what is really on the bottom of the ocean in this case.
