hi , I am new user to this forum,do not know all the rules .so sorry if I offend. Re Prisons around the World do you have the name of the Boronia Womens Prison in western Australia.It is a Pre-release prison
mainly for women that have been convicted for minor ? crimes.

Hi,

This is the "Miguelete prison" building, a very old one in Montevideo - Uruguay, and which is not currently being used as a prison (since 1990).

This prison was built by Eng. Canstatt in 1880, and it was based on the model of the english prison of Pentonville. Both follow the Jeremy Bentham's panopticon concept.

You can see the simmilarity with the Pentoville prison (already posted), which is at ( 51°32'42.18"N, 0° 6'55.50"W )

Hi,

This is the COM-CAR prison at Montevideo, which is the currently biggest prison in Uruguay.

It is located in "Santiago Vazquez" neighborhood, out of the city of Montevideo.

It has a theorical capacity of 900 inmate, but it is overpopulated (aprox. 2833 in 2003).

"white only" political prisoners were held there during the Apartheid regime. The compound is composed by three separate areas: 1-Pretoria Central Prison , 2-Pretoria Prison & 3-Maximum Security Here you can see an old photo of Pretoria Central Prison:

I maintain a list of all prisons in the British isles.
Includes:

  • England
  • Wales
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland
  • Irish Republic
  • Isle of Man
  • Channel Isles (Jersey & Guernsey)
  • Faroe Isles
  • Remote custody (anywhere else)


Includes guidance on finding prisons further afield
and an island gazetteer (there are over 5000 islands in the British Isles).

Also covers mental asylums, military & political prisons, child/adolescent prisons, and Immigration Detention Centres.
