GE + QuickTime + MacBook Pro = System Freeze
      #739146 - 01/02/07 02:24 AM

Greets,

I have a C2D MacBook Pro and a Powerbook G4. I've run into a problem where Google Earth (v4.0.2694 beta) and QuickTime (v7.1.3)running at the same time will completely take my Intel Mac down.

Here's what I do to reproduce it:

1. Start up Safari. Go to a website that features a QuickTime movie (http://www.apple.com/trailers, for example.)

2. Pick a trailer and start watching it.

3. While the trailer is running, start up Google Earth.

4. Watch and wait while first Google Earth freezes after login, then the entire system freezes completely.

Once the system locks up, the only way to fix it is a reboot.

When watching movies from within QT, this does not happen. It also does not happen on my PowerBook. Google and QT versions are the same.

Both systems are running 10.4.8 and have all software patches installed. Any ideas?

Have confirmed on several Core Duo and Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros that this is an issue, and also, that it does not occur on PowerBooks.

QT version is 7.1.3
GE version is 4.0.2694 built 15 Dec 2006.

GE is using the OpenGL renderer.

The lockup/freeze occurs under the following circumstances:

- while any QuickTime movie is playing in a Safari window, AND after GE logs on successfully and begins zooming the earth in.
- if you play a QT movie in a Safari window after you have loaded GE, and then switch back to GE and move the map around using the cursor.

It does not seem to lock up if you run a QT movie from within QT. Nor does it lock up if a QT movie loaded in a Safari window is not playing.

There must be some race condition with how Safari handles QT movies and GE. But that is just a wild guess at this point.

Re: GE launch + QuickTime movie playing = Freeze [Re: roxnadz]

I'm getting the same freeze, but in my case I was playing a video in iTunes.

GE 4.0.2736 on a Core Duo iMac with 10.4.8

Reproduced this with my prior version of GE, which was from last October, so downloaded latest GE build. Unfortunately reproduced a couple more times while trying to finish watching the video.
Finally did a search and found this post. Tried launching GE while the video was not playing, presto!

Anyway, interesting bug.

Cheers,
Brian
