Over 2,000 historic Topographic maps overlays
      #819852 - 03/04/07 12:38 AM

View in Google Earth (7790 downloads)

12/6 - Just finished moving most of this collection to new server and adding several 100 more maps to the collection. Now contains over 1,000 maps and new index system. 7x7 maps don't all work right now since I'm still working on those.

8/24/2007 - Major update to this collection is now underway.

Please re-download the attached network link. Collection now contains an entirely new index system that creates a polygon outline of each map. Just click on the Information Baloon for a link which will turn on a particular map.

Google Earth start up time will not be affected, since the only thing that loads at start up is the small (less than 1K) network link. Nothing else loads until you click on a specific map or collection of maps.

Darn cool, Matt.

So cool, in fact, that there's a risk people will try to turn on all of the maps at once (or just too many for their computer to handle).

You can use GE to fix this pretty easily by looking at the properties of a folder and selecting "show contents as options".

The relevant KML is explained here:

http://earth.google.com/kml/kml_tags_21.html#listItemType

Basically, you add a ListStyle to whatever styles you have already and give it a listItemType of radioFolder:

Code:

<Style id="radioFolderExample">
<ListStyle>
<listItemType>radioFolder</listItemType>
</ListStyle>
</Style>

Thanks, ya, that is always a potential problem. I do make extensive use of the radio buttons for each specific map set, but I'll try using them for the upper folder levels as well.

Thanks, I'm in the process of making some major improvements to this collection so parts of it may go in and out over the next few weeks.

For those of you that have downloaded this previously, please re-download the KML file from the original post. The only one will cease to function over the next few weeks as I continue to move maps over.

Just finishing up a huge update to this collection. All the maps have been recompiled and moved to a new much faster server. Also, index system redone, and several 100 more maps added to the collection. There are now over 1,000 maps in the collection.

Download the KML file in the original post again to get updates.

For those of you following along.

I just finished adding about 900 15-minute historic USGS Topographic Maps covering almost the entire states of Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts's, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. Most of the maps are dated between 1890 and 1910.

There is a long history to these maps. My understanding of the story is that Christopher Marshall took a laptop and a scanner to various libraries and created the original scans, which consisted of 4 scans for the four corners of each map. JPGs from the original scans can be downloaded from MapTech and University of New Hampshire. The next chapter to the story occured a few years ago when Richard Utter took about 900 of the maps, stitched together the four pieces of each map and georeferenced them. Then finally, last week I received an email from Russell Nelson saying that he had all of Richard's georeferenced maps on a couple DVDs and that he would be happy to send them to me. Now here we are a few days later and I have converted all of them to Google Earth SuperOverlays and uploaded them to my server. So I would like to personnally thank Christopher, Richard and Russell for their contributions in making this possible.

This collection does not have all the topo maps that are available from the University of New Hampshire and Maptech websites. Richard appears to have scanned one revision of each 15' map. Maybe someday I will find the time to add multiple revisions and the maps that are available in other scales. But that's an enormous undertaking so probably won't happen any time soon.

If you already have the network link from this post, then do not need to download it again. The new maps should appear automatically. If not, then download from original post.

Here is link to a map of the coverage area
