Hi simon_a,

I am glad that there was no offense in my attempt on this subject !
You are a tremendous asset to the Google Earth Community !
Enough patronizing !

Your Questions:

Q1.
Quote:

I guess you're looking at preventing viewing the data once it's in GE

A1: YES

Q2:
Quote:

but I'm not sure how you'd prevent the user from intercepting it on its way from the Internet.

A2: Not at this stage maybe something to consider later after I've got things going in the right direction.

Q3:
Quote:

Will you be able to prevent right-click, save-as?

A3: YES

Nothing is 100% for protection anywhere. I believe if I can create an alternative to some protection of which it may stave off the majority of folks without the authors consent. To me something is better than open season on everybody's legit work.

Regards,
IDEVFH

Hello IDEVFH,

This is certainly a good direction.

In terms of protecting the data all the way from the Internet, I can only imagine that encryption is the best way forward - we could call it SKML - (Secure KML)!

If I've got this the right way round, it would require an asynchronous encryption method where Google would publish a public key for KML authors to use to encrypt their KML. This would then be useless to anything other than GE, which would include a built-in private key (i.e. the only way to unencrypt the KML is with the GE Client). Now that the data's in the client, your ideas can be used to prevent copying and resaving.

Simon.

Hi simon_a,

Thanks for the name SKML !

Until the SKML could be matured, I intended to supply to an author a unique generated GUID Key. This would allow enough security for the beginning without the necessity of Google to supplement a different signed encryption. Obviously, there are many different types of security data provisions out there that I could use as well.

I've discovered durning the Alpha phase there is such a SIMPLE way of protection without me have to go over-board toward this method integration to a KML lock down. Simply said, it was starring me in the face, of what I thought, was going to be such a mountain too high to climb.

Regards,
IDEVFH
