Do you know where the Hubble Space Telescope is?

The Space Telescope Science Institute, home of Hubble, is pleased to announce the availability of a KML that shows the current position of the Hubble Space Telescope against the sky background in GoogleSky!
This dynamic KML refreshes Hubble position every 5 minutes and also displays Hubble's current orbit.

Click on Hubble and get information about its history and its instruments!

Use the attached file or have a look at Explore Astronomy: gSky

Many thanks to Dr. Alberto Conti, Dr. Carol Christian and their colleagues (Josh, too) at NSTScI for this fascinating journey to the heavens with Hubble...and for helping to make Google Sky a reality!!

Alberto et. al. , thank you so much for the Hubble location KML, it is great. Is there a way to correlate where the Hubble is to where MY position is on the earth? So if it was visible at night, we could find the Hubble telescope? What kind of telescope would I need to see the Hubble at night?

I was addicted to Google Earth, now I am addicted to Google Sky! what a great learning tool for my kids!

Ok, then we know of at least of 2 people addicted to GoogleSky: you and me, at a minimum!
Currently, the "Where is Hubble Now" layer simply assumes you are at the center of the earth with no horizon, like the rest of GoogleSky does for astronomical images.
At STScI we are working on extending this layer to do:
a) given your IP or your position on the planet, we will generate a layer that will show you Hubble "greyed-out" when it's not visible from your location. This will still assume no horizon.
b) an addition to the current layer that will tell you what part of the sky Hubble is observing now, including information on the observation being carried out.

We are also planning on adding other satellites for which STScI had data in their Multimission archive, such as GALEX, FUSE, etc...

We will post both to the community and at our own site: http://hubblesite.org/explore_astronomy/gsky/

Ciao

Hi Rick, in the meantime, you may want to check this site out,

http://www.heavens-above.com/

They provide ten day predictions, ground track charts, magnitude etc, etc.etc for HST, relevant to the coords you enter.

Happy trails.

Yes, I should have posted all the satellites a long time ago... I have them all, but you know how it goes... work!

Great job!
