This ETA is of the Dam in Clinton Massachusetts, (damming the Nashua River to create a 64-billion-gallon reservoir to be connected to the Boston water supply by an aqueduct.) It was built in the 1890's at a cost of over 21 Million dollars. It created the Wachusett Reservoir

Quote:

Building Wachusett required removing 360 homes, eight schools, four churches, six large mills, 19 miles of road and more than six miles of railroad tracks. It even required digging up several cemeteries...........The granite dam in Clinton spanned 971 feet and rose 114 feet above the ground. It remains the largest hand-built dam in the world

On the north eastern side of the dam you can see the fountain that has been shut down since 2000..The dam has been closed to the public since 9-11 and hopes to reopen to visitors in 6 months

Boston, still with a thirst for water, needed more.. 40 years later the Quabbin Reservoir was created

Click Here for past posts of the Quabbin Reservoir. and here for more info on supplying Boston with water

Okay, so maybe I'm a dam idiot -- why isn't there a river leading away from this dam? There's a tiny little creek. Is all the water being sucked out unseen by the aquaduct? Every dam I'm familiar with has a genuine river escaping from it.

Netmonkey:
Turn on terrain and you can see the old river valley leading ENE from the dam. It's possible there is little flow going down the valley anymore since there are no large water releases for hydro-electric generation, as is common with western dams.

Thanks! I'll buy that answer. Maybe 'cause I'm from B.C. and am much more familiar with hydroelectric dams, I thought that's what they all did!
