Unless they have data he refuled ive done straight line distance for 4 hours of fuel he could have made it into some regions of california. But ive also seen data he was flying east of the hilton ranch so thats why i asked the validity of these images.

In Google Earth, how do you know if you're looking at "fresh images".
Using GOES satellite data, I looked for small plumes of smoke within the hours after Steve's departure. Large fires are obvious in these images, and small fires are visible if you look hard. So I thought if the plane crashed, it might make a small short-lived plume.
And I found one. The details are here: http://www.bautforum.com/off-topic-babbling/64253-finding-steve-fossett.html
I'd like to scrutinize this area in Google Earth, but the images seem to be the same ones from a few days ago, although the website linked here states they will be updated on Saturday.
So how do I know how fresh the images are? Thanks

Hey if you go on the www.mturk.com website and download the kml file you will see a network link load the Geoeye sat data.
Otherwise you can see the time the Digital Globe Coverage was taken in the Layers windown.
The GOES weather sat data wouldnt have enough resolution to see much.
The www.mturk.com site pools everyones efforts together thanks!

GOES doesn't have enough resolution to see an airplane, but it does have enough resolution to see a plume of smoke. For example, the smoke from Twin Towers on 9/11 was clearly obvious in weather satellite photos. I was just hoping for a much smaller version of that. Sometimes when airplanes crash, they burn some brush around them which adds to the smoke plume.
Thanks for the reply. I didn't know about using the layer window.

I have no experience posting online, but felt I should attempt it this one time only.
If you will go to 40 degrees, 28' 16" N and 118 degrees, 18' 40.23" W you will see a small private airplane flying above a lake very near the Rye Patch Reservoir dam. That's not too far from Pershing, NV, and a long distance to the north of the Hilton Ranch. The plane has white wings and is about the style of a medium-sized Cessna.
I have no idea if this is significant, or even if the satellite image is recent, or if the plane is of the right type, etc.
Just thought it was worth pointing out. I spotted the plane by accident while looking to see where Fossett flew out of. I'm hoping the searchers have good luck. JGS.

I found something that stood out for review and submitted a hit about 0500 this am on amazon mechanical turk.com but so far have not received response. At 38.02.02.78 N and 119.31.03.77 W. Approx 54 miles southwest of airstrip and about 1 mile northeast of Beson lake. Not looking at straight down - using tilt with terrain off. Also if you turn the compass so that north is facing east, it shows up better. New to google earth so may be nothing but looks like what could be a plane with a wing sticking up, and the dimensions corrrespond somewhat to the plane length given in mech turk . Object looks as if it's throwing a shadow. I'm going to eat but will check in later to see if any interest. Thanks

Please Note- The Images used are up to 3 years old.
The latest images for Nevada are from April 2007. Turn on Layers > Digital Globe Coverage ( at the bottom of the list of layers) Zoom in and a date will become visible .
This date will indicate when each area was photographed + how much cloud cover was present. Each Image is a composite of the collective data available for that particular area.
A very noble cause your engaged in --but not much use trying to locate Mr Fossets plane.
Possible uses include :-- Looking for possible crash sights or enforced landing area's
As each day passes his family and friends must fear the worst. Lets hope he is found safe & well soon.

The Bad Focus is at 1500 ft hard to pick out a 22 foot objext by shape very grainy when you zoom
Some of the map placement seems to be off by 2/10ths to a half mile in some locations.
The Good At least there trying
Someone mentioned the distance away from the ranch.
its only 16 miles to the top middled of this overlay and 62 miles to the bottom very well in range of the aircraft he was flying with 4 hours of fuel.
Time to continue my search of strange rectangles
Now after trying to refresh image getting database errors

Unless I'm missing something it appears all the recent Geoeye imagery on mechanical turk (and referenced on the Steve Fossett website) is in CA. Not a single image over NV. Is this the experience of others? Aren't too many dry lake beds in the California Sierra Nevada if he was looking at lakebeds. Perhaps more images will show up tomorrow? Otherwise our image searching may not be too useful other than to confirm the "negative hypothesis".
