thanks -- I was hoping to solicit the expertise of google earth folks like you on this forum to see if I was out in left field. I'm all in for noble causes (Got to keep that Good-Bad ledger balanced) but the last thing I would want to do is contribute to a misinformation overload. Be that as it may, I responded to a national internet request and spent hours on Google Earth...Once I saw the object could not go another day without consulting you guys who know about GE or someone at amazon Mech Turk acknowledging that they had received the info for further review -- which, btw, Amazon Mech turk did after I sent an email to the Hit requestor -- thanks AMT!. I can sleep now.
Anyway -- Everything is enabled as suggested but all I see corresponding to a date is "Image 2007digital globe'. I accessed this image via amazon mech turk.com hit using their xml and coordinates. I am, admittedly, a novice at Google Earth but I was relying on the assumption that they had enabled latest satellite imagery related to Fossett's flight before they solicted the assistance of a multitude of internet junkies like me.
While directly the only time I've wasted is my own, my concern is this -- if they ( at Amazon Mechanical Turk) knew that the images on Google Earth as of 0500 am Sept 8 are virtually useless - being 1-2 years old - why would they enable this task prior to any updates and before ensuring that we had the latest to look at . I am distressed to think of the wasted time and expense of reviewing each hit. I guess using technology is like having a spouse......Love but recognize limitations .
Hoping for happy conclusion for Fossett, family, and friends, Chelsblu.

the plane in the brush I have found is only 21 miles from the airport, matches colour, size and shape and is in search area, the coordinates are 38.290258,-119.242190, copy and paste that into the fly to box. or click on the google earth Icon in my other post " Steve fossetts plane?" Just hope someone rules it out, It seems to be undamaged and if so, if it was set down gently then the ELT would not go off, which his has not. he could have had a heart attack and tried to set it down before crashing, also as a private pilot I can tell you that we have a priority of operations when doing an emergency landing, and sending out a mayday call is only done if time permits, first is to ready for landing safely.

also steves sight mentions the images for the search area and states they are current, so untill someone comes out and says stop looking because these are old images I will continue to search, I find it hard to believe that they would set up the search with GEOEYE to specificly search for Fossett and then put up old images.
"New satellite images are also enabling internet-based anaysis by individuals hoping to help. The project is an 'Amazon Mechanical Turk' based effort with recent images from GeoEye, supplier of many images to Google Earth."

OK--Lets try and clear up the confusion here;--
---.The images on GE are not current ---The images supplied via M/Turk are current
If you wish to Overlay the M/Turk Image on GE?? -- Download and Open This KML File
IMPORTANT: Ensure that you've loaded the KML file above in Google Earth before navigating to the co-ordinates. Otherwise, you will be looking at old and irrelevant images. or
To Overlay the individual 85mx85m image from the Amazon M/Turk page into GE
---> ADD > Image Overlay > Paste the image URL into box.. ( Remembering to use the Ruler tool to give you scale ( 85m x 85m ) ) > Orientate the M/Turk image with GE image.

Hope that helps?--
PM me if you need any help.

The following news article gives a lot more useful information. It reports that he already selected a site for his land speed record prior, and may have just been taking a sightseeing flight before dissappearing. This would give an excuse to search for Fossett in the mountainous areas. I wonder how visible the other older plane wreck sites said to be in the area appear to the imagery?

I've noticed some changes were made overnight:
1. There's more imagery to look at which is farther north and east than the set commented about in my earlier post. Perhaps this had to do with the orbit of the satellite.
2. The Mechanical Turk page is better, the image to be checked is now at the top of the page instead of the bottom which minimizes scrolling.
A few things that might help the process:
a. Is there is anyway to reduce some space above the image so that the Submit button and radio buttons are one page (for those of us with smaller displays).
b. Would it be possible to reverse the order of the radio buttons, put the "No this image etc." above the the "Yes" button? Ergonometrically this might make more sense and speed the process.
c. Finally, any possibility of getting a link on the Mechanical Turk page to this Google Earth page since it appears this is kind of a clearing house of information?
I notice the Example image on the right is black (i.e. no example aircraft). Anyone else have this problem? Good luck all in your searching.

Fossett Airplane? 38°28'55.68"N 119°24'18.17"W
Definitely a plane, but would a downed plane look like this in the trees?

Not sure if anyone looked but the following information was posted by Alejandro Barnett in a topic with the subject: Re: Steve Fossett Missing from this Air Strip!
Here are the corodinates and the text of his place marker:
39 14'44.46"N 118 41'51.54"W
POSIBBLE POINT FOSSET PLANE - PLEASE CHECK Posible, point search by Alejandro Barnett, abarnett@entelchile.net, santiago - chile please note that there is a T patterns just down would be important to check, Cómo llegar: Hasta aquí - Desde aquí
Does have interesting characteristics and perhaps should be reviewed by experts.

Didn't see this labeled through Google Earth Community and Eddie Fry's placemark seems a bit off from the original.
Looks like this plane is flying though.
Has anyone identified the other non-Fossett crashes that have been found? So we can see what we may be looking for?
