The 'Sky View' needs more improvement
      #986200 - 08/28/07 07:56 AM

I tested 'Sky View' tool and have some comments. Firstly, it would be nicer if we can get a night view at a specific time/day for a given location. Also noticed was that lack of the Andromeda galaxy picture upon clicking a mark supposedly showing the galaxy. Instead, I got a description about 'young and old stars' in the galaxy, I think such information should be the second tier information. I hope Google adds multiple links to get more pictures and information for each point of interests.

I agree, trying to find clear and large photographs of a star/galaxy/nebula is time-consuming. In that (Hubble Showcase) link you mention is a sentence on the bottom of the pop-up that says "Explore all of the HubbleSite Newscenter" That may suffice for some, but I strongly prefer the famous Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) site by NASA here.

A comment of my own now: What is up with the ruler in the bottom left of the screen above the coordinates? It says Andromeda is only 162 miles wide (which it's most definitely not)! Shouldn't it say Light Years or Parsecs instead?

Wow. Do you want google earth to think for you too?

First off, if you haven't figure it out yet, it's new software and they do update the software quite regularly...

What you're looking at is the inside of the same sphere they use for Google Earth, so what the measurement tool is doing is measuring on the inside of the earth sphere (the image of space being projected inside it) So, forget the measure tool... It's not as simple as measuring distances on the planet, it's a completely different animal. And yes, it is Google's fault for allowing you to use it in Google Space. But a little bit of thinking quickly remedies that.

Second, what are you complaining about the pictures for? Seriously? Have you tried to use other night sky software? This is way better than most other things out there and it's free.

Third, if you want to know what is visible in the sky from your particular place on the planet, there are plenty of other resources on the internet that you can use that will complement Google Earth. It only takes a little effort. Oh, try using your eyes and brain as well, go outside and look.

Some worthwhile notes: The first things I would expect anyone to notice is that there is no built in layer for the path of the Zodiac, seems like something they should have even in an early release like this. A longer time line would be nice too, and planets scaled properly with actual images would also be nice. The sun in it's current position to scale might be neat too, but might also take up too much room. There should be a layer allowing for it anyways. That's all from me.

I am certain that Sky WILL BE better than other things, but the poster is correct - we need a view from a selected location/time. As for the 'other things out there' there is one other that is also free and open source - see http://www.stellarium.org/

Wrong. This software is not for that, it is a map of the sky, not a map of your current night sky. What you're suggesting could sort of be done in this sofware by typing in your location and having the camera constrained to the view you have from your area, but that is about it. What you're suggesting would be entirely different software.
