Google Earth Community: Ireland in 1898

During 1898 an Irishman, John F Finerty, returned to Ireland, having emigrated in the 1864, to the United States. During his trip, he took over 400 photographs all over the island. On his return to the US, he published, through the J. S. Hyland Publishing Company, a book to inform the Irish living in the US as to the current state of Ireland, and also to attract tourists to Ireland.

Ireland in 1898 was still a part of the British Empire and this is reflected in some of the placenames. And for this presentation, I have left the names as they appeared in the book and for this I make no apologies.

Names and places that have since changed names are as follows

Kings County is now Offaly (photos number 35, 318 & 368)
Queenstown is now Cobh (photos number 88, 158, 188, 212, 307, 311 & 367)
Kingstown is now Dun Laoghaire (photos number 94, 114 & 336)
George Street, Limerick is now O'Connell Street
Wellesley Bridge, Limerick is now Sarsfield Bridge
Kingsbridge Terminius is now Heuston Station

Help is wanted to precisely locate the following locations

50 Giants Head Rock, Portrush, Co. Antrim
64. The Moat of Ballylochloe, Co. Westeath
173. Rossbeg Co. Mayo

Some locations could not be accurately placed. So I have taken liberties with the following photos and placed them in random locations in the right area.

285. Passenger Train, En Route, Dublin

Eviction scenes

Photos number 19, 33, 46, 66, & 128 are all placed in the Vandeleur Estate, Kilrush, Co. Clare. The written text for photo 46 states "Vandeleur tenant". I placed all the eviction photos in a rural location outside Kilrush Co. Clare for this purpose. But this location may not be the Vandeleur estate, so if any body has more details please send a Private Message or reply to this post.

Instead of 400 placemarks opening at once when you download the file, I have divided the presenation into 8 folders of 50, each folder containing a network link to my files. This presentation was created using the Google Earth Outreach spreadsheet application. The advantage is that, should I have to relocate any photos, the changes will be available when I update my files (to anybody who has downloaded the file to their computer)

I also recommend that you turn on the Panaramio layer to compare the Ireland then and now.
