As a former nuke worker, there are three things to consider regarding Exposure (versus Contamination): Time, Distance and Shielding. ^_^

Exposure versus Contamination (think of dog doo...)
Stepping in the pile would get you contaminated, but the smell is 'only' exposure. ^_^

The exposure bit depends on how close Kid Speed's unprotected skin was, and for how long.

Radioactivity is all around us. Anyone who works at or lives close to a coal handling facility is exposed to Thorium... coal's dirty little secret.
