I honestly sense your frustration in these remarks. You have been working at this for a long time and then new people sign on and make comments about things that have been discussed months earlier. I believe this will probably be an ongoing issue in recovery efforts that can last a very long time.
For SAR missions it will be a lot different.
I am working on programming a system, which will allow the InternetSAR.org Info analysis team, to compile and disseminate information in an automated fashion including KML overlays. The info analysis team will be headed up by Supersquint and Greg and will consist of a team of InternetSAR.org participants of their choosing.
Once the info analysis system and team are put in place, a lot of this frustration will be addressed in that we will have a systematic way to compile and verify information so that there is one authoritative source of facts upon, which these discussions can be reliably based.
I know this doesn't totally help with today's frustration, but it will help reduce frustration in the future. My goal is to have a test version of this info gathering system in place by the end of this week so that Greg can start playing with it and see if it will meet his initial needs.
This system won't be perfect but like my original KML overlay generator, it will provide a starting point to help us figure out what it is we really need and it will evolve over time.
Ifly does have a good point, however, in that recovery missions will always have a higher level of frustration because the very fact that it is taking so long to find the missing individual will tend to indicate that maybe there is something critical is being overlooked.
Redlands19 does make a valid point about recovering ground, but I have a feeling this will be the nature of the way these discussions are set up. Ideally we would probably set up a unique forum for every search mission so that each mission could have several threads running, which might allow for a better organization of discussions. This is one of those things we will have to consider over time.
