While I try to work out how to put this up on Google Earth thought I would share it with you here...

Shark Sightings
15/03/08 6pm
While kayaking here spotted an (approx) 8 foot shark 25m of the shore in about 3m depth.

I approached form the west paddling casually out to Middle Harbour Head, my first impression was seaweed, but then noticed the outline of the shark shape, it then spotted or heard me, turned its body to investigate then suddenly drifted of into deeper water where I lost sight of it.

I had my dog (Ridgeback) on board in the front seat & as I turned toward the shore nearly hit a rock, the dog freaked out & nearly jumped out so there was a bit of a panic on-board while a settled the dog back into the cockpit whilst I steered the kayak around to head back.
On my way back I warned some swimmers out at depth off the beach & they retreated rapidly for the for shore! LOL! Sorry I didn't mean to panic anyone.

The shark looked like it was stationary but I guess it was slowly circling a pool of sunlight, the last sunlit area around the shore, probably hunting for fish flashes as they swim into the sunlit area.

After the initial shock & panic (my first shark sighting) I gave it consideration & concluded that they definitely are intelligent & big bad hunters, they have great skill in hunting techniques, I can imagine how difficult it would be to catch fish that way. And I have a greater appreciation for these creatures from my first real life contact.

I reckon the shark was a Bull Shark as it was large around the belly area, still they are known to have a go at kayaks and the shinny aluminium rudder could be mistaken for a fish.

After spotting all the shark attack GEarth bobbles in Sydney Harbour, where I happen to kayak frequently I have decided to kayak elsewhere (Pittwater) from now on.
