Mount Whitney, at 14,494 feet, is the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. Only McKinley in Alaska is higher. Except for altitude and potential seriously bad weather, it's a fairly easy hike. So many want to get to the top there is a quota to keep the trail from serious overcrowding.
