Google Earth Community: Big Ear Radio Telescope, Home of the "Wow Signal"

Here is a TerraServer overlay of the former site of Ohio State University's "Big Ear" radio telescope, constructed in 1963. On August 15, 1977, while working on a Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project at this site, astrophysicist Jerry Ehman detected a strong narrowband radio signal which was dubbed the "Wow Signal." The signal, which lasted for 72 seconds, bore the earmarks of potential non-terrestrial and non-solar system origin. Despite many attempts to find it again, the signal has never been detected since, and scientists have been unable to explain the phenomenon. The Big Ear was torn down in 1998, and a golf course and lake now occupy the site.
