On my Dell Dimension 2400 desktop with an integrated Intel 82845G graphics card, running under Debian, I get the famous "could not access graphic card" message, and Google Earth does not even start. This is under XFree86, and when I check the XF86Config file, I see that the Intel chip is defined there. Interestingly enough, on exactly the same machine but booted into Windows XP Professional, so using exactly the same hardware, Google Earth has no problems either accessing the graphics card, or running beautifully.
