Finding altitude is possible but not as frequently as you would think. This plane, for instance is part of an image that includes most of the bridge and the south bank of the river. The shadow should fall somewhere to the ENE of the plane according to the shadow direction. But the north end of the bridge, the north bank, and portions of the river were shot at a different time. Shadow direction here would be to the NNW. It looks like the potential shadow of the plane would just be within the northern area of imagery. Another problem is often that planes are too high to leave a distinct shadow on the ground. I doubt if this plane is too high to see its shadow, but I'm fairly sure he's up high enough to allow for plenty of space between the him and the ground.
