No-longer-relevant posts. Contributions welcome!
      02/19/07 03:28 PM

Hello everybody.

Every once in a while I come across posts which point out something that is no longer there. For example either a data glitch which has been fixed or else some people or something which have gone due to a data update.

The people who maintain 'collections', such as sasroodkapje's excellent Visible Shipwreck Collection or Cyclonic's equally excellent All Aircraft in Flight collection do a great job of keeping their collections 'clean; by periodically deleting sightings which are no longer visible.

For all the rest, the moderators have to scour the forums, continually searching for these kinds of posts and then when they find one they move it to the archive.

I want to propose a way that we can all make the moderators job a little easier in this regard. Whenever one of us non-moderators who can't move posts finds such a post, add a link to it to this thread. (Not create a placemark, just point to the post.) Then, the next time a moderator comes on, they can just check this thread, fix up anything that's been found by members of the community, delete the post from this thread and ta-daa a slightly cleaner bbs. Kind of a 'many-hands-make-light-work' style principle.

I'll get the ball rolling by suggesting a couple of posts I just found. However I'll add them as a reply to this so that, once fixed, the moderator can just delete my reply and not take this whole thread with it.

PS : I debated for quite a while whether this thread should 'live' here in the Open Forum or in Data Discussions or perhaps even in the Archive itself. I think this is the best spot for it because it's not really talking about Data issues per se but rather posts about data or glitches that are no longer there. But if a moderator strongly feels this should be somewhere else then go ahead and move it

Edit : Noisette suggested that it would be better if the member who reported the no-longer-relevant post here actually deleted their own post from this thread themselves once a moderator has acted on it like Hill did on my first one below. The background to this is that moderators don't like to outright delete other peoples' posts and I think that's a good philosophy to follow so yes let's do it here too. So the way it could work is :

1. Member A finds a no-longer-relevant post and adds a reply here which points to it.

2. Moderator B moves the no-longer-relevant post and edits Member A's reply to say the deed has been done.

3. Member A deletes the reply they made in step 1 to stop this thread from getting too large.

Cool Thanks Noisette!
