El Rev. James Lienert (Padre Jaime) Junto a la tumba del GRINGO VIEJO--- Rev. James Lienert, Padre Jaime, at the tomb of GRINGO VIEJO, THE OLD GRINGO.The town of Sierra Mojada is seen in the background.
The resting place of the great North American writer, Ambrose Bierce, whose fate was always shrouded in mystery until the diligent investigation of the priest James Lienert (Padre Jaime) brought it to light. Translation of the inscription: Very trustworthy witnesses suppose that here lie the remains of 1842-Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce-1914 a famous American writer and journalist who on suspicion of being a spy was at this place put before the firing squad and buried
El Padre Jaime fungió como párroco de Sierra Mojada por mas de 30 años y el escritor Ambrose Bierce es el famoso GRINGO VIEJO, inmortalizado por Carlos Fuentes en su novela homónima y por Gregory Peck en la versión cinematográfica de la misma.--- Padre Jaime served as pastor of Sierra Mojada for more than thirty years. The writer, Ambrose Bierce, is the famous Gringo Viejo (Old Gringo) immortalized by Carlos Fuentes in his novel by that name, and later also by Gregory Peck in the film version of the same.

Recently there was published on the Don Swaim Site the excellent research by Leon Day which corroborates with no room for doubt that Padre Jaime’s theory, which in its own turn was an assiduous investigation, about the fate of Ambrose Bierce who was executed at the municipal cemetery of Sierra Mojada, Coahuila.

This page in Spanish about Bierce tells of the old gringo executed at a place near Sierra Mojada, and corroborates the investigation of the same.
It seems strange that neither the authorities or the people of Sierra Mojada appear to be aware of the importance of the person whose remains lie in the town cemetery, and if it were not for the dedication of Padre Jaime (another old gringo) who from his own pocket ordered a plaque to be made and erected, the Old Gringo would never have had a place where his demise would be remembered.
