this remarkable old-dutch sentence on house nr. 50 in the oude kijk in 't jat straat litterally means 'i'm still looking in' but what is the stone head looking at and who was it? the streetname provides no clue. 'jat' means steal or hand. two legends began to take shape. one defining the word jatt as the old name for street, and one degrades the word jat for the word 'gat', meaning hole, the nickname for the canal or 'wad', which is short for waddenzee. the last story is based upon the war in 1672 when carl rabenhaupt placed a guard looking over the canal to check if the food supplies from the north were not blocked by the german invader bernhard von galen. everyday the nobleman rabenhaupt asked the guard if all's ok, and he replied: 'ick kick nog in 't wad/gat' until one day he justed skipped the last word.
