The ship in the photograph is likely the USS Des Moines (CA 134) or USS Salem (CA 139) (depending upon the date of the photograph), one of the last all-gun heavy cruisers. That it is a cruiser, rather than battleship, can be seen by the arrangement of the 5"/38 gun mounts. Cruisers had gun mounts just aft of number 2 turret and forward of number 3 turret. USS Salem is now a museum in Quincy, Massachusetts. The only other all-gun heavy cruiser is the USS Newport News (CA 148). After an explosion in number 2 turret, the center gun was removed and the turret locked in place. These three ships were the last all-gun heavy cruisers built.
