Devil's Millhopper Giant Sinkhole

Located in Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park, this sinkhole is 117 feet deep and 500 feet in diameter.

Named for its similar appearance to the hopper of a mill, along with the fossils, shark's teeth and bones found at the bottom, suggesting animals entered it on the way to meeting the devil.At 271,000 square miles, three ecological environments exist in the park. The sandhill environment, the hammocks, and the swamp areas only support flora and fauna adapted to year-around wet conditions.

The sinkhole is home to 12 natural springs.Since 1976, it is a Registered Natural Landmark with a stairway of 236 steps down into the bowl. It was created when the roof of an underground cavern collapsed.
