In Google Earth, how do you know if you're looking at "fresh images".
Using GOES satellite data, I looked for small plumes of smoke within the hours after Steve's departure. Large fires are obvious in these images, and small fires are visible if you look hard. So I thought if the plane crashed, it might make a small short-lived plume.
I'd like to scrutinize this area in Google Earth, but the images seem to be the same ones from a few days ago, although the website linked here states they will be updated on Saturday.
