Quote: As each day passes --the prospects for a happy outcome fade. The fact that 6 unknown plane crash sites have been found in this area -shows how hard the task is.
Some of these wrecks might actually be known.but since there complete wreck list, its hard to say.
People have been crashing in this area since the beginning of flight (well almost), and planes that went missing more than 3 decades ago, would simply have been written off, unless someone important was onboard.
Hikers report these things now and again, but if the site is old, the report might not go any further.
All that said, its a HUGE area and small planes have totally dissapeared in areas less than 1/5 that size.
If Fossetts aircraft had landed, it would be intact and could be spotted from G-earth. If it truely crashed (but since the emergency location transmitter was not activated, it might not have impacted hard) such a light aircraft crumble into nothing, and might not be spotted even if walked by a few years later.
Since the emergency location transmitter was not activated, its possible that Fossett attempted to ditch the plane in a lake, rather than attempt a landing in a heavily wooded area. The plane would sink and hopefully the pilot would swim ashore.
