The attached KMZ file contains time zones boundaries for:
• Canada
• Saint-Pierre & Miquelon
Use the radio buttons to select between:
• winter time zone map
• summer time zone map
• time zone outlines map
If you hold the mouse over the center of an area in the "outlines" map, the the outline for that area will become highlighted and a label will appear.
If you click the Left_Mouse_Button in the center of a highlighted area, a balloon containing time zone information will pop up. The same effect can be had by placing the mouse anywhere inside an area and pressing Shift+Left_Mouse_Button.
You may wish to turn off Google Earth's "borders layer" when viewing this file.
For the most part, the borders in this file are more accurate than those provided by Google Earth. In some spots, the Google Earth borders are off by as much as 10km!
There are currently 595 polygons in the file; many of these represent islands.
If you find discrepancies between the names of islands contained in this file and those shown natively by Google Earth, don't assume that Google Earth is correct; I found lots of mistakes in the Google Earth data!
The maps in this file reflect a number of time zone idiosyncrasies that are not properly reflected in most provincial and federal maps.
Particular areas to note (in no particular order) are:
• Creston, Yahk, Kitchener, and most communities on the eastern shore of Kootenay Lake in British Columbia are on MST year round.
• The Listuguj Indian Reserve in Quebec uses AST/ADT; the area is too small to be reflected in official federal maps.
• In 2006, Cornwallis Island in Nunavut started using EST year round.
• The entire Minganie region in Quebec (including Anticosti Island) is now on EST/EDT; this is a result of new legislation that went into effect Jan 1/2007. Previously Minganie was split down the 63rd meridian.
• The town of Atikokan Ontario (and Quetico Provincial Park) use EST year round.
• The communities of Big Trout Lake, Angling Lake, Wunnummin Lake, Kasabonika, and Kingfisher Lake in Ontario use CST/CDT.
• The communities of Mishkeegogamang and Pickle Lake in Ontario use EST year round.
