UPDATE: 27.11.2005
Schroeders farewellSince a couple of days, the sattelite tag stopped transmitting. At first we only received the same temperature data, then the transmission stopped totally. Looks like Schroeder finally got rid of the tag or there is a malfunction within the system.
After over three month of a interesting "live" travel visible trough Google Earth it's now time to say good bye to our whale shark schroeder.
If everythings goes right we will be able to have another whale shark in GE around Jan.2006 - this time it will be tagged in Djibouti (Southern Africa)!
Of course we will report about this as soon as we have the first data coming trough.
Anyway, the projects website will still be updated with information about new AND processed old data. So keep checking it out or add the RSS Feed!
Regards,
André

Update: 15.Nov.2005
After more than two month of tracking the Whale shark Schroeder, we are very happy that the tag is still transmitting very acurate position data.
If everything goes right we will have another whale shark tracked on our platform, tagged by a french group of whale shark researchers. As soon as we have results we will post them here first...
We recently added a overlay picture for the wave heights and directions - very interesting to see that the shark is moving with the current/waves !!!
If Schroeder continues his move with the same daily speed average he will be in Indonesia (Sumatra) in about 2 weeks from now on.
During the last days we also created a true network link for GE (15min refresh intervall) - you can download it
here

Original Article
I would like to introduce an interesting project... it shows the use of googleEarth in the educational / research sector...
In August this Year a group of young students from the German Europen School Singapore tagged a whale shark with an sattelite-tag, where the data now being published in the web trough a google earth KML-file. This 7 meter long male Shark, named "Schroeder" now is on it's way from the Seychelles to - maybe - Somalia (Afrika). During the last few weeks you could see a move of over 700 KM ....
Ok, not yet a layer but still dynamic(updated every 12 hrs by a php script) ....
You can download the automatic updating file
here Also see the
project website - we would be happy if you could give us some hints how to improve the usage in this project.
Regards,
André
